The Warmth Layer That Ties Your Bed Together

Quilts vs Comforters — Understanding the Difference

Quilts and comforters both serve the same fundamental purpose — providing warmth and a finished look to the bed — but they differ in construction and feel. A quilt is typically thinner, featuring layers of fabric stitched together in a decorative pattern, making it lighter and more suitable for year-round use in warmer climates. A comforter is a thicker, puffier single piece filled with down, down-alternative, or microfibre and enclosed in a fabric shell, providing substantially more warmth and volume. Both are excellent choices depending on your climate and personal preference for weight and warmth.

Fill Types and Warmth Ratings

The fill of a quilt or comforter determines both its warmth and its weight. Down fill — whether genuine duck or goose down — is the lightest and warmest option available, prized for its incredible insulating power relative to its weight. Down-alternative and microfibre fills offer similar warmth at a lower price point and are hypoallergenic, making them suitable for those with sensitivities. Wool and cotton fills are naturally temperature-regulating and well suited to those who tend to overheat during sleep. Many of our quilts and comforters are rated by warmth level so you can choose the appropriate option for your climate.

Choosing the Right Quilt or Comforter

When selecting a quilt or comforter, consider both the size of your bed and how much overhang you prefer — a queen comforter on a queen bed will sit flush, while sizing up to a king provides a more generous, draped look. Consider the care requirements of your chosen fill: down and wool options often require specialist cleaning, while microfibre and synthetic fills are typically machine washable at home. Choose a cover fabric that complements your bedsheet set for a coordinated, polished bedroom aesthetic.
