The most common approach is to pair a bench on one or both long sides of a rectangular dining table, with individual chairs at the short ends for those who prefer a seated back support. This creates a flexible arrangement that accommodates a varying number of diners easily — simply slide along the bench to create more room. A bench on one side with chairs on the other is a popular configuration in family dining rooms, where children typically take the bench side and adults sit on chairs.

Choosing the Right Dining Bench

When selecting a dining bench, ensure the bench length is appropriate for your table — ideally matching or very slightly shorter than the long side of the table.
